Letters, 1833-1843.

Letters from Carl C. Rafn, Secretary of the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Thomas H. Webb, for a time Secretary of the Rhode Island Historical Society. The letters concern Rafn's research into the pre-Columbian settlement of North America, in particular the role of the Scandinavians and the publication, subscriptions, and English translation of his "Antiquities Americanae." Rafn's letters request information on Indian place names and inscriptions on rocks, in particular Dighton Rock in Berkley, Mass., in the hopes of supporting his claim of a pre-Columbian Scandinavian settlement in New England and that the local Indians were a mixed race partially derived from them. Also included are letters enclosing shipments of books and antiquities related to the subject, and copies of some engravings of Dighton Rock.
